I'm looking at ways to network devices. At the hardware level this is most likely to use 2-wire RS-485.

At the protocol level I'm investigating the industry standard Modbus protocol. Has anyone used Modbus for device commuications? How useful would it be to connect ZX devices to PLCs and other devices that support Modbus or even have a network of ZX devices all communicating data via Modbus?

Are there other communication protocols (e.g. SNAP) that are preferred?
