True, but what about the ZX44n or ZX40n where the crystal choice is up to the user?

I suppose this may fall into the 'Use at your own risk' category.

To paraphrase Henry Ford, they can choose any crystal they want as long as it is 14.7456MHz, 18-22pF, parallel mode.

By the way, all of the issues raised so far are equally applicable to the VM mode devices.

yes - and one other niggle... on the ZX24 VM products. an 8 ft. serial cable not connected to anything on the far end, is an antenna. The noise causes the ZX to misbehave.
