Updated Forum Software

Discussion about the ZBasic language including the System Library. If you're not sure where to post your message, do it here. However, do not make test posts here; that's the purpose of the Sandbox.

Updated Forum Software

Post by dkinzer »

After fighting with the older phpBB v2.x code for a few years now each time the web hosting company upgrades the PHP version they're using, I finally relented and just installed the latest phpBB v3.x. Since the code is PHP 7 compatible, that should simplify coping with future host server upgrades.

All of the posts in the old forum were preserved as were all of the attachments. There are a few relatively minor differences but, over all, I think that new forum code will serve the purpose well.

However, the new phpBB doesn't support the mail-to-forum capability, digests by email, and the email subscription capability that had been added to the standard phpBB v2.x code base. The phpBB v3.x does have a subscription capability, but users are alerted to new posts in the fora to which they've subscribed by a notification that appears when the forum site is visited. You'll find a Notifications link near the top right corner of the page. If you want to use this capability, you'll have to visit each forum that you want to subscribe to, scroll to the bottom and click the link near the lower left corner that says "Subscribe forum".

It is great that you are keeping up the web site.
It means to me you are going to keep supplying ZBasic part.

I was able to find a "Digests" extension and it is now installed and working. If you want to receive digests, log in and then launch the User Control Panel (click you forum name near the top on the right side and choose it from the menu). Once in the User Control Panel, select the Digests tab. From there you can select the how often and when the digests are sent and which forums you want included.
